Microsoft decided to stop offering the Microsoft Certified Solutions Associate (MCSA) certification, along with the Microsoft Certified Solutions Expert (MCSE) and Microsoft Certified Solutions Developer (MCSD) certifications. This move is aimed at introducing training and certification options that are more focused on specific job roles and are in line with what the industry needs today, especially considering the shift towards cloud computing.
The MCSA certification used to be essential for IT professionals to show they’re skilled in using Microsoft technologies like Windows Server and SQL Server. But as the tech world quickly moved towards using cloud services, there was a need to update how we measure someone’s tech skills. So, Microsoft decided to phase out MCSA, MCSE, and MCSD by January 31, 2021. This decision was about offering certifications that match the skills needed for a world that relies more on cloud technology.
Replacing MCSA, Microsoft introduced role-based certifications. These are designed to give professionals the skills they need for jobs in cloud computing, AI, data science, and other new tech areas. These certifications focus on specific job roles, making sure the skills learned can be directly used in real work situations. The idea is to close the gap between the skills people have and the skills companies are looking for.
Microsoft’s new certification model is categorized into three levels: Fundamentals, Associate, and Expert. Here’s a brief overview of what each level offers:
Fundamentals Certifications
Ideal for beginners or those looking to validate foundational knowledge in technology, including cloud concepts, AI, and data.
Associate Certifications
Targeted at professionals with some experience, these certifications validate the skills needed for specific job roles like Azure Administrator, Data Analyst, and Security Engineer. These are seen as the direct successors to the MCSA certifications in many ways.
Expert Certifications
Designed for seasoned professionals, Expert certifications require a deeper level of knowledge and experience.
The retirement of the MCSA certification marks a significant shift in Microsoft’s approach to professional training and certification. By focusing on role-based certifications, Microsoft aims to ensure that IT professionals have the most relevant and up-to-date skills required in a cloud-centric world.
While the MCSA and its related certifications have been integral to many professionals’ careers, the new role-based certifications offer a pathway to future-proofing skills in an ever-changing technology landscape.
